This reminds me very much of a device we have in our history museum (midwest US)that was used to turn a spit over the fireplace. Ours is called a "clock jack" and works by a weight on a chain turning a gearing system. It's neat to think that people from all over the world and from all times are finding similar clever solutions to their similar problems.
